“… Senior Katie (Kathleen) Kelly (210 kills, 153 digs) and junior Olivia Piazza (227 kills, 210 digs) can play with the best players in town. Actually, they do already, in the club season, which hasn’t always been a luxury at JP2 of having year-round players on elite club teams.

“These two girls have the ability to change the dynamic of every game we play,” Young said. “I’ve been trying to get them to work together as outsides to be this powerful duo. I see it in practice a lot and I need it to translate to games. They have all the ability in the world.

“They’re two of the best players I’ve ever coached and two of the best – attacking, serving, defense – that have ever come through this school. If they work together with the rest of the team, they can really show up in this city, in the county.”

Piazza said this year’s team is “for sure better” than last year’s, but it hasn’t always shown with new players around them learning how gain, re-gain and sustain momentum throughout a match.

“We have to give them advice when they don’t know what to do and keep energy up,” Piazza said. “We have to stay positive.”

“We give people a run for their money,” Kelly said. “We fight every point. We try our hardest. The score may not show it, but sometimes it does show. We can definitely fight.”
